Romania Rejects bet365’s Suspension Appeal

The Romanian National Gambling Office rejected bet365’s request to end the temporary suspension of its online gambling license, imposed in October. bet365 filed a criminal complaint in December alleging the suspension was a move to help local operators.

bet365’s request to end the temporary online gambling license suspension ordered by the Romanian National Gambling Office, or ONJN, recently was rejected by the Bucharest Appeals Court in Romania. The suspension was imposed by ONJN in October. At the time, bet365 management stated the company had acted in accordance with pre-licensing concessions prior to the regulation of the Romanian online gambling market.

In December 2015, bet365 filed a criminal complaint accusing ONJN of “discriminatory and corrupt practices.” bet365 alleged in the complaint that the suspension actually was a move to assist local operators.

To date, under the new gambling regulations, ONJN has issued 18 licenses, including European operators Betfair, Amaya Inc., Fortuna, Sportingbet and Unibet.
