Rwanda Suspends Betting Machines

The government of the republic of Rwanda has temporarily suspended the use of slot machines, saying they have been operating outside regulations and without clear guidelines.

Other forms of gambling unaffected

The Rwandan government has temporarily suspended betting and gambling games played on slot machines, according to the South Africa News. Minister of Trade and Industry Francois Kanimba said the action came after inspectors determined that some operators were not adhering to set regulations or using clear guidelines for play.

Apparently there has also been a widespread outcry among residents and local leaders who are concerned about problem gambling.

Kanimba said the suspension will last until the ministry determines an appropriate way to remediate the problem. He called on law enforcement to make sure the ban is enforced.

It’s been estimated that more than 8,000 slot machines operated across Rwanda. The public opposition is so far limited to slots, as there has been no action taken against casinos, lotteries, sport betting or internet gaming in the country.
