Sacramento Landmark Could Become Casino

Elks Tower (l.) in downtown Sacramento, California could become a 24-hour card club with amenities such as a lounge, bar and “spirits library.” The state capital allows for four card rooms, and currently there are only three. The owners of the elegant, classic 224-foot tower, which has been featured in many films, would like to change that.

The historic Elks Tower in Sacramento, California could be transformed into a 24-hour card club, lounge, bar (including a “spirits library” offering rare vintages and hundred year old brandies) and restaurant.

The owners of the 224-foot tower have applied for a conditional use permit for the facility, which is located in the downtown area, under the name Elks Gaming and Entertainment Project.

“It’s an exciting time for the rebirth of downtown Sacramento, and this is an exciting piece of that rebirth,” declared Downtown Sacramento Partnership Community Services Director Dion Dwyer, who told KCRA TV “We’re looking at transforming Sacramento from a 9-to-5 city really, to an 18-hour city,” Dwyer said. “And, this would be a compliment to that.”

City zoning law permits four casinos; currently three are operating. If the permit is granted the owners say the casino and amenities could be operating within 18 months.

The casino would only take up part of the tower. The lower level would taken up by a port wine and chocolate venue.

The city council has historically been resistant to card rooms in the downtown area.
