Schenectady Developer Faces Criticism

The Rivers Casino at Mohawk (l.) has experienced a recent update to design plans, but has faced some criticism in regards to those plans. Some feel the new design is nothing more than a sneaky way by owner Rush Street Gaming to save some cash.

Rush Street Gaming, the company behind the development of Rivers Casino at Mohawk Harbor along with the Galesi Group, decided to update the plans for its 0 million casino hoping to break ground in the fall. Unfortunately, those plans have been met with a little criticism, which Rush Group CEO Greg Carlin has staunchly defended.

Carlin revamped the casino renderings, which he felt played more in line with the look and feel of downtown Schenectady, and the city as a whole. Critics say the plans are nothing more than a play for his company to save money. Carlin said the budget for the project hasn’t changed.

Mary Cheeks, general manager for the property, is excited to move to the area, and has said she plans to live in Schenectady to be part of the environment and close to work at the same time. Cheeks is looking forward to being part of the community, and seeing how it comes together.

The closest casino to the property is the Oneida Nation’s Turning Stone, about 100 miles away, with Foxwoods being another option. Cheeks understands the importance of a strong marketing strategy and on the topic of the two other casinos, said, “I’m going to make sure all that scope of population comes to us at Rivers here in Schenectady.”
