Seneca Gaming to Run Southern Tier New York Casino

The owners of a resort in Union, New York, now vying for one of four casino licenses up for grabs in the state, has announced it has brought in Seneca Gaming Corp. as its casino operator. No financial partner has yet been announced.

The Seneca Gaming Corp., which runs three casinos in western New York State, would operate the proposed 0 million Traditions Resort & Casino in the Southern Tier if the proposal passes muster with gaming regulators.

The Walsh family, owners of Traditions at the Glen in Union, would build the $150 million Traditions Resort & Casino with 1,200 slot machines and 50 gambling tables, reports the Elmira Star-Gazette. The project would add about 160 rooms to the existing hotel for a total of 200.

In the Southern Tier region, Traditions will go up against Tioga Downs in Nichols and Rochester-based Wilmorite for a casino license. Those developers say they do not feel threatened by the announcement of a seasoned tribal gaming partner.

“We strongly feel, regardless of who their partner is, that our proposal is superior to anything that would be in our region,” said Juris Basens, vice president of gaming operations at Wilmorite.

At present, no financiers of the project have been announced.
