Shinnecock Nation Announces Long Island Casino

The Shinnecock Indian Nation of New York recently announced that it will develop a casino on its Southampton reservation in partnership with Tri State Partners, which has worked with the Seminole Tribe of Florida to develop the Hard Rock casino in Atlantic City.

The casino would be the second in Suffolk County; the first is a video lottery terminal at Jake’s 58 Hotel & Casino in Islandia, which opened in May 2017.

The federally recognized, 800-member Shinnecock Nation attempted to open a casino on its Westwoods property in Hampton Bays in 2007; a federal judge rejected that proposal, citing potential traffic issues. The tribe’s efforts to open casinos at Belmont Park and Nassau Coliseum with Detroit-based Gateway Casino Resorts also failed.

The tribe also plans to open a gas station/convenience store on tribal land and has begun to plan for a medical cannabis facility located on its Southampton reservation.
