South Korea Sales Down in November

Gaming revenues at South Korean casino operator Paradise Co. Ltd. dropped 16 percent year-on-year for the month of November. Recent arrests in Mainland China may be partly responsible for the decline.

Mainland China a key market for Korea

Gaming revenues for Paradise Co. Ltd., which operates five foreigners-only casinos in South Korea, dropped 16 percent year-on-year in November. According to the Reuters news agency, the losses may be traced in part to the arrests in Mainland China of 13 foreigners and several Chinese “for activities related to recruitment of Chinese citizens for the purposes of gambling in South Korean casinos,” reported GGRAsia.

The arrests were part of the Chinese Ministry of Public Security’s Operation Chain Break, which wants to keep Chinese citizens from playing in other countries and punish those who try to recruit those citizens to gamble abroad.

Mainland Chinese players are a key target market for foreigners-only casinos in South Korea. Only one casino in the country is open to residents.
