Statement: Suncity has not even visited the province
Numerous reports of Suncity’s plans for a Vietnamese casino may be false.
In response to the announcement made in multiple publications and websites, the company issued a statement saying it has no intention of investing in the island.
“Suncity Group has been referred to in recent media articles on investment intentions on the island of Phu Quoc, Vietnam,” the statement said. “We wish to advise that Suncity Group has not been to the province nor do we currently have any intentions of investing there.”
The report, which apparently originated with the news site Vietnamnet and quickly was repeated by the global media, alleged that the junket and casino service provider based in Macau would invest in a casino resort on Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island. Suncity CEO Alvin Chau Cheok Wa was said to be in active talks with Vietnamese authorities.
The reports were nothing if not detailed. They said the complex would be located in Rach Tram hamlet on the north side of the island. Suncity’s first choice was reportedly Bai Truong, the island’s largest beach, according to Vietnamnet. Nguyen Thanh Nghi, vice chairman of Kien Giang Province, was said to have endorsed Suncity’s plans for Vietnam.
Suncity will soon open its City of Dreams Solaire Resort and Casino in Manila.
Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, is located in the Gulf of Thailand south of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In 2014, the government designated the island as a special economic zone where casinos could be developed.
