Sweden Announces Gambling Law Overhaul

The Swedish Gambling Authority has announced its plans for a revision of the country’s gambling laws that includes licensing procedures and an 18 percent tax on gross gambling revenue for both land-based and online gambling.

The authority said it hopes to begin accepting license applications by July 1 and have the new laws go operational at the start of 2019. The act covers online casinos, online poker, online bingo as well as online and land-based betting.

The authority published its timeline for the new regulations last month. According to a report by the BBC, the timeline included:

• The new gambling act is expected to be introduced in parliament in March 2018 along with secondary legislation that will supplement the main bill.

• In mid-March 2018, the authority hopes to distribute both amended versions of the previously published regulations containing licensing requirements, and additional new regulations which will be subject to public consultation.

• The law is expected to be voted on by parliament in May 2018. This would be followed by a public release of information on the license application process.

The authority has already issued several draft regulations that include information on the proposed licensing laws. The authority also submitted technical standards on the new laws to the European Commission last month.
