Take That, Crown: Star to Invest $1 Billion in Sydney

In the battle between Australian casino giants Star Entertainment Group and Crown Resorts, Star just made a decisive move, announcing it will spend $1 billion to upgrade its Sydney property (l.).

Australian casino giant Star Entertainment Group has announced the latest salvo in its ongoing war with rival Crown Resorts. According to the Asia Gaming Brief, the operator will plow $1 billion into its Star resort in Sydney.

Star, formerly known as Echo Entertainment, will invest $130 million to upgrade its hotel and apartments in hopes of attracting a young professional clientele, said General Manager of Hotels John Autelitano.

“We don’t have enough rooms. We can’t keep up with demand and it’s very hard to get in on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights,” Autelitano told the Australian. “We are not just renewing a hotel; we are putting a lot of thought and strategy behind it.” The hotels have been operating at more than 90 percent occupancy, AGB reported.

The company is also Star is planning a new six-star, 360-room hotel at Pyrmont which may be managed by Ritz Carlton.
