Thailand Proposes Disaster-Relief Lottery

The Government Lottery Office of Thailand recently proposed developing an Asian Economic Community lottery to help member nations when they need disaster relief. The lottery would be similar to those offered in western nations and offer jackpot prizes, said GLO Chairman Apirat Kongsompong.

Within the next two to three months, Thailand’s Government Lottery Office board will research the possibility of launching an Asian Economic Community lottery to provide assistance for member nations that have been impacted by disasters. GLO Chairman Apirat Kongsompong said, “We will explore the types of lotteries currently sold in Association of Southeast Asian Nations member countries and the possibility of cooperating with our neighbors to launch a regional lottery like in Europe. The proceeds may be used to help member countries when disasters strike.” He added the lottery would offer jackpot prizes and all member countries would sell tickets.

New online lottery products, vendor discounts, penalties for overpricing and adjustments to government revenue from sales would require amendments to current law, Kongsompong noted.

ASEAN includes 10 Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.
