Three decade gaming veteran Thomas McCartney has been appointed to be president and general manager of Viejas Casino and Resort in San Diego County. He took up his new job on November 1.
Chairman Robert Welch of Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay Indians, which owns the casino, made the announcement last week. Welch praised McCartney as “a dynamic force within the gaming industry for years, and he has produced successful results throughout his career. We are confident that his leadership and experience will allow us to continue to improve our world class customer service, and to maximize the performance of our latest economic expansion.”
Welch has been involved with the development of the New York-New York Hotel and Casino, Luxor Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino and the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, where he was chief operating officer for the past three years.
Commenting on his appointment, McCartney said, “I am excited about the opportunity ahead of me with Viejas Casino and Resort. The property is in the midst of tremendous growth and I am honored that the Band of Kumeyaay Indians have put their trust in me to lead such exciting initiatives.”
Viejas is at work on a new all-suite hotel tower that will have luxury suites, new dining, a luxury spa and a larger gaming floor. They are expected to be completed in two years.
