Treasury Department Names Tribal Representatives

The U.S. Department of the Treasury recently appointed three members to the Tribal Advisory Committee on issues relating to Native Americans and taxes. They are Jamestown S'Klallam Tribal Chairman W. Ron Allen (l.), Cherokee Nation Treasurer Lacey Horn and Mohegan Tribe Lifetime Chief Marilynn "Lynn" Malerba.

Three tribal representatives recently were appointed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to serve on its Tribal Advisory Committee, established through the Tribal General Welfare Exclusion Act of 2014. The TTAC advises the Secretary regarding issues related to taxation of Native Americans, training Internal Revenue Service field agents and providing training and technical assistance to Native American financial officers.

The three new TTAC members are:

W. Ron Allen, chairman of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe since 1977 and chief executive since 1982, who has led the tribe from a landless reservation to a land base of more than 1200 acres and helped established several business enterprises. He served as president of the National Congress of American Indians from 1995-1999.

Lacey Horn has served as treasurer of the Cherokee Nation since 2011. She was named Tribal Executive Officer of the Year in 2014 by the Native American Financial Officers’ Association. Previously she worked at KPMG and Hunt Oil.

Marilynn “Lynn” Malerba, lifetime chief of the Mohegan Tribe, was named traditional leader of the tribe in 2010 and has served as Mohegan Tribal Council chairwoman and as board member for the Mohegan Sun and Pocono Downs Casinos. Currently she is a member of Indian Health Service Tribal Self Governance Advisory Committee and several others.

Treasury’s appointees to the TTAC will be joined on the committee by four members to be appointed by the chairs and ranking members of the Senate Finance Committee and the House of Representative Ways and Means Committee.
