The Tennessee Education Lottery recently announced sports betting regulators and law enforcement are investigating two of the state’s four regulated online sportsbooks—as yet unnamed–for “significant anomalies” including “illegal” betting activity on Super Bowl Sunday.
As a result, a total of 74 sports wagering accounts have been closed permanently. In addition, “several” open Super Bowl bets were voided.
Tennessee’s four sportsbooks handled a combined $15.5 million on the Super Bowl game and paid out $12.6 million in winning bets. The rest was kept as revenue.
Between the launch of sports betting in Tennessee on November 1 through January 31, the sportsbooks handled $523 million in wagers, according to lottery officials. The four books handled $131.4 million in November and $180.9 million in December. January handle was more than $210 million.
They also recently stated that Churchill Downs, Wynn Sports and William Hill are moving forward toward launching in the state, although no dates have been provided. Two other operators also are getting ready to launch in Tennessee, they said.
