U.K. Tracks Ready to Race

The British Horseracing Authority can have horses and jockeys ready to run in a week’s time when the government says the country’s racetracks are cleared to reopen.

U.K. Tracks Ready to Race

The British Horseracing Authority chief executive said when the government lifts the starting gate, they can be ready to race in less than a week’s time.

“We can be one of the first to go,” Nick Rust told BBC Sport. “We don’t want to make the case ahead of public opinion. We’re saying we’re ready when you’re ready, when the public health is ready.”

The industry employs 20,000 people in rural economies, most of them just scraping by.

“Of course, we want some revenue to start flowing to make sure they’re looked after and they’re not a burden on the national purse,” Rust said. “Goodness knows how difficult it is to manage the curve while trying to balance the public and economic situation.”
