Uber Approved for McCarran Pickups

Clark County approved ride-hailing service Uber to pick up passengers at McCarran International Airport, after Uber officials agreed to share information with county officials and established a way to collect and distribute an airport pickup fee charged to all passengers arriving at McCarran and departing via taxi, limo, or Uber, which also reduced its passenger fares by 30 percent.

Visitors to Las Vegas now can use Uber to travel from McCarran International Airport to their hotels and other destinations.

Clark County recently approved allowing ride-hailing service Uber to make pickups as well as drop-offs at McCarran, giving travelers options other than taxi cabs, shuttle buses, limousines, and rental cars.

Uber and other ride-hailing companies previously could drop off passengers at McCarran, but they weren’t allowed to make pickups, partly due to opposition from Clark County taxi companies, but mostly due previously having no way to handle an airport pickup fee.

A new app enables the fee to be added to Uber fares and transferred to the airport, and Uber recently agreed to comply with information requests from Clark County regarding drivers, passenger pickups, and other information.

Uber also adjusted its pricing, decreasing the fare by 30 percent for its UberX basic service. The new base fare now is $2 and $1.10 per mile, and 20 cents per minute, while the minimum fare and cancellation fees remain $5.

Many Uber drivers were displeased with the rate decreases, but Uber says the drivers will get more fares and make more money.
