The English city of Leeds marked the grand opening of its ?30 million (US$37.8 million) “super-casino” on January 26.

The Victoria Gate Casino, operated by London-based Global Gaming Ventures, is the third-largest gaming hall in the country and the biggest in the north of England and Scotland, reported CalvinAyre.com.

GGV CEO Andrew Herd called the grand opening “a pivotal moment” for the city, which now has a “stylish, buzzing entertainment hub in the heart of Leeds city center where everyone from first-time visitors and passers-by to top poker players are catered for.”

Leeds City Council Deputy Leader James Lewis said the casino was “already proving itself to be a great success, attracting many visitors from a wide area.”

Herd said the casino has “already had a positive impact on the region, creating more than 200 jobs, 90 percent of which have been sourced from within the Leeds City region.” The property received more than 5,000 job applications, he added. “We were overwhelmed with responses, and it speaks volumes for how keen people are to be a part of such an exciting project.”

Robin Dobson, director of retail development at Hammerson, said the new casino “provides the city with a unique and vibrant entertainment experience.”
