Vietnam Plans Betting Trials

Vietnam could announce the soft launch of a sports betting trial by the end of this year, as well as a three-year test that would allow Vietnamese locals gamble at two of the country’s casinos.

Bets limited to daily

Draft legislation that would let Vietnamese nationals gamble at Vietnamese casinos could be approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc this year or in early 2017. The country’s gaming bill would also allow locals over 21 bet on dog and horse races. They would not be able to exceed US$45 in bets in one day.

According to the Vietnam Economic Times, locals gaming has been on and off the table in Vietnam for a decade. The proposed gambling legislation includes new safeguards; for example, it would prohibit those related to jockeys, monitoring body members, professional football players, arbitrators and managers of betting establishments from betting on sports.

The bill also establishes a five-year trial for online and land-based wagering on foreign soccer teams, and requires that betting shops must be located at least 1,640 feet from schools and playgrounds.
