Washoe Tribe Breaks Ground

The Washoe Tribe in Nevada broke ground on its planned casino on Highway 395 in Gardnerville in northern Nevada, which complements an under-construction travel plaza slated to be done in March. The tribe expects to open the casino in a year and provide 80 casino jobs along with 20 travel plaza jobs.

The Washoe Tribe in Nevada began construction of its new Gardnerville casino with a groundbreaking ceremony on October 29.

The tribe is building the casino along Highway 395 South next to its under-construction Wa She Shu Travel Plaza and expects the casino to generate more business for the travel plaza as well as generate gaming revenue.

The Washoe Tribe partnered with the Poarch Creek Indians of Alabama on the project. The Poarch Creek tribe has extensive experience operating similar businesses.

The Washoe Tribe expects to complete the travel plaza by March and the casino in about a year, and it hopes the new attractions will give passersby a reason to stop while traveling along Highway 395.

Once opened, the casino should provide about 80 jobs, while the travel plaza will provide another 20 jobs, according to the tribe.

“The jobs are open to everyone. We want to contribute to the local community as much as possible,” Off-Reservation Washoe tribal representative Mahlon Machado told the Tahoe Daily Tribune.
