What’s Smoked in Vegas Stays in Vegas

Marijuana is legal in Nevada, but possession is still a crime under federal law, and Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport wants no part of it. To drive the point home, the airport has begun installing receptacles for travelers to dump their stash before boarding outbound flights.

What’s Smoked in Vegas Stays in Vegas

McCarran International Airport has introduced receptacles for travelers leaving Las Vegas to dispose of their legal marijuana before it becomes illegal.

Nevada legalized recreational pot last year, but possession remains a crime under federal law a Schedule 1 controlled substance, in fact, same as heroin so moving it across state lines is a no-no, via airliner or any other means.

Accordingly, marijuana has been banned on all airport property since October.

To date, McCarran has installed 13 of the green boxes, labeled “Disposal for Prescription and Recreational Drugs”: 10 outside the airport, three outside the car rental facilities. Plans call for eventual deployment of 20 of the receptacles, which are bolted to the ground and designed so it’s impossible to reach in and remove any of the contents.

“The drawer pulls out, you drop your stuff in and you close it. You can’t really get your hand in there,” an airport spokeswoman told the Las Vegas Sun. “If you start tampering with them, you’d be detected pretty quickly.”

What happens to the stuff when the boxes are emptied? That isn’t clear, the newspaper said.
