Australians spend more per sports betting user than any other country, but the United States has more participants betting online. Those are the top portions of the data on sports betting for 2023 presented by CasinosEnLigne.com.
Whoever tops the charts owes much to the innovative technologies and expanded legalization of sports betting which drives the market. Since 2017, a year before the U.S. legalized sports betting, some 85 million people began betting online, pushing total users to almost 128 million in 2023.
Australia’s average revenue per user reached $1,300, just about four times the global average of $340—and more than Japan, Germany and the U.K. combined.
Behind Australia in the per user spending, sits Japan with an average of $600. Germany comes next with an average of $380 per bettor. The U.K. follows with $310 and then comes the U.S. at $245. Mobile betting, in-play betting, and digital sportsbooks are three factors credited with drawing millions of users to the markets. Worldwide, 86 percent of wagers come online.
Statista data show the United States has more online players than Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan and Germany combined, even though Australia alone produces 20 percent of the online sports betting revenue. In 2023, more than 31 million Americans used betting apps and websites, and don’t be surprised if 50 million becomes a reality in four years.
After the U.S., the U.K. has the second-highest number of bettors with 13.6 million, followed by Australia at 6.8 million, Japan at 6 million, and Germany at 5 million.
