Set to open next month, the Rain Rock Casino in Yreka, at the northern tip of California, held a job fair last weekend that attracted more than 1,000 attendees to the Siskiyou Golden Fair Grounds.
Some came from as far away as Minnesota. Rain Rock, which is operated by the Karuk Tribe, expects to employ more than 200 including positions in table games, slot machines, food and beverage and casino operations and management. Once selected, employees will require special training, and will be paid while they take it.
The casino will operate 500 slot machines, eight gaming tables and a restaurant.
Yreka is a city of about 7,000 residents. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karl Greiner told News 10 “It’s going to be a very big deal for Yreka. It’s been many years since we’ve had this kind of a job influx coming in, and it’s sorely welcome.” It doesn’t hurt that these new employees will spend money in the city’s economy. And visitors to the casino will see other attractions, and possibly spend money in the little downtown area.
Several years ago, the city welcomed the Fruit Grower Supply saw mill, only to see it close recently. So, the town is excited about a new employer of this magnitude.
