Australia Considering New Gambling Ad Rules

The Australian Communication and Media Authority is considering new rules for gambling advertising during live sports events. One focus is on placing restrictions on ads during live-streamed sports similar to restrictions on ads during broadcasts of live sports.

The Australian Communication and Media Authority is looking to extend gambling ad restrictions to online live-streamed events.

Nerida O’Loughlin, chair of the authority, said current ad restrictions apply only to broadcasts of sporting events and the authority wants to extend them to online live streams. That includes a ban on ads being aired during live-sports streams and a daytime ban from 5 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

O’Loughlin said the authority wants to create a “safe zone” across traditional and new media platforms while children are likely to be watching. A ban on daytime sports gambling advertising during broadcasts began in March after approval by Australia’s government. Ads are also banned during the broadcasts of live sports events.
