Formula 1 Racing on the Vegas Strip?

Formula 1 Racing is reportedly pursuing a race that would be held on the Las Vegas Strip. A source “with intimate knowledge of the situation” told the Las Vegas Review-Journal the prospect of an F1 race on the famed thoroughfare are “very real,” with organizers in discussions for months. The source also said Las Vegas could become the home of F1’s flagship U.S. race.

The Review-Journal reported that the race may take place this year or next and possibly originate at the Bellagio, heading north from there. That stretch of the highway would be temporarily closed to host the race.

Vegas seems a natural for the event, which has global appeal. Some 433 million people watched F1 races in 2020, a slight decrease from 2019. The 2021 Formula One season drew an average of 934,000 viewers per race on ESPN, up 54 percent over 2020. This would not be Las Vegas’ first F1 race. The circuit held the Caesars Palace Grand Prix in 1981-82 in the resort’s parking lot.

An F1 spokesperson declined to confirm a Sin City event, saying, “We do not comment on speculation regarding matters like this.”
