Kialegees May Seek New Casino Site

The Kialegee Tribal Town's unfinished Red Clay Casino is an unwelcome eyesore in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. A federal court ruled the tribe could not conduct gambling on the Indian allotment. But rumors are swirling that the tribe may be considering a new casino development in another location.

There’s speculation in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma that the Kialegee Tribal Town of Oklahoma may be considering another site for its Red Clay Casino. Its recent attempt to open the casino on an Indian allotment in Broken Arrow was blocked by a federal court which ruled the land could not be used for gambling purposes. The National Indian Gaming Commission also said the land could not be used for a casino. The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the tribe could not be sued for its pursuit of the project.

Meanwhile the unfinished building is an eyesore to the community. A local pastor said, “It is just kind of a dead spot when all around seems to be thriving and healthy.”

At one point the tribe was looking at an allotment held in trust in Wagoner County, but the NIGC determined that site also could not be used for a casino. Now rumors are swirling that the tribe has its eye on a new development at a different site but nothing has been confirmed.
