City of Dreams Mediterranean, Melco Resorts & Entertainment’s first integrated resort in Europe, has hit a setback. The IR under construction in Limassol, Cyprus will be delayed six months due to the extensive infrastructure needed, according to local media. The new IR will be the first in Cyprus and reportedly one of the biggest in Europe. Construction started last month and the resort was originally due to open by the summer of 2021.
According to Inside Asian Gaming, minor changes have been made to the original design, including the layout of the casino, an increased number of guest rooms and an additional gaming area. The modifications will significantly increase the overall cost of the investment, originally estimated at €550 million (US$612.4 million).
City of Dreams Mediterranean is a joint venture. Seventy-five percent of the enterprise is owned by Melco and 25 percent by local firm Cyprus Phassouri Ltd. The original design called for 126 gaming tables and 1,200 gaming machines plus a five-star hotel with 500 hotel rooms, 11 restaurants and cafeterias, a wellness center, sports center, extensive pool area, high-end retail area, an outdoor amphitheater and 9,600 square meters (103,000 square feet) of meeting and convention space.
