Sweden Criticized on Deposit Limit Change

Sweden plans to lower the weekly deposit limit per week for online casino accounts from SEK 5,000 ($548.76) to SEK 4,000. This will prompt players to create multiple accounts, say critics of the new policy.

Sweden Criticized on Deposit Limit Change

The government of Sweden is being criticized by an online gaming association for its new proposal to lower the amount of deposited funds allowed per week in online casino accounts.

The Minister for Social Security Ardalan Shekarabi said the proposal is to lower the weekly deposit limit from SEK 5,000 ($548.76) to SEK 4,000.

Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling (BOS) Secretary-General Gustaf Hoffstedt said this will encourage multiple accounts that will be harder to track. “As the system is designed, it leads to players — who want to play for more money than the proposed limit — setting up new gaming accounts with new gaming companies,” he said.

He added, “Before the deposit limits, you played with one or two gaming companies, but after the introduction of the limits, we have seen a sharp increase in the number of gaming companies per individual player.”

Hoffstedt concluded that “fragmented” accounts will prevent gaming companies from capturing “risking gaming behavior.”
