Hard Rock Presses BCN Project

The planned $6 billion BCN World project in Spain is in a holding pattern, but U.S.-based casino giant Hard Rock International continues to pitch its proposed $2.5 billion holiday resort at the 800-hectare (1,976-acre) resort on the Costa Daurada. Catalan President Carles Puigdemont (l.) says the project is still under review.

President: “Project is alive”

Hard Rock International President Hamish Dodds and Vice President Nelson Parker recently met with Catalan President Carles Puigdemont to discuss their plan for a €2.5 billion entertainment complex at BCN World in the Catalonia region of northern Spain.

According to the Catalan News Agency, Puigdemont and Vice President Oriol Junqueras said BCN World is currently on “stand-by” as lawmakers weigh the impact of the development. Catalan government spokeswoman Neus Munté said the government wants a “social and political consensus” about BCN World, and also has demanded that the resort not be gaming-centric. “Only 6 percent of BCN World will be casinos,” she said.

Puigdemont will seek input from the community as the discussions continue. “If we should hold a consultation with the local community in order to solve the different interpretations, we are committed to doing so.

“The definitive urban plan hasn’t been approved yet,” he added. “There is still a final stretch to go through, but the project is alive. I believe is an opportunity which shouldn’t be missed.”
